We are in trying economic times. Many are fearful about losing their job. This is a legitimate concern in today's environment. Layoffs are common when things slow down. There will be many valuable people let go due to the circumstances. This is a reality that we all must face.
Nevertheless, my question is "how valuable are you?". In the work field, value is often equated to knowledge. Those who are the most knowledgeable about their field/company often attain the greatest success. This brings up the million dollar question "how knowledgeable are you?". This is something that is within your control. Increasing what you know decreases the likelihood that you will be let go if there are cutbacks. Also, if you are one who gets cut, your chances of securing another position are increased.
Begin today to increase your knowledge drastically. Put down that trashy romance novel and read something that pertains to your business. Most industries have trade magazines. There are always resources within your company that offer training. Spend some time looking at competing websites. The goal is to increase your value as quickly as you can.
Like was mentioned, time are difficult. The business environment is not a pretty one. However, companies always need valuable people. Become a student of your industry. The more you know, the more valuable that you are.
