The Bucket List

I recently watched this movie for the umpteenth time. It is one of those films that I can never see to many times. Being involved in the personal happiness field, it is one that really moves me. If you have not had a chance to see it, I highly recommend it.

The basic premise of the movie is that Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are given a death sentence from cancer. This stimulates them to do all those things they always wanted to do. They create a "bucket" list-all the things they want to do before they kick the bucket. Having only a defined period of time to live, it makes sense to squeeze all that they can into the remaining days.

Of course, this is ideal for people with only a short time to live. The rest of us have other things to attend to. We will be able to get to all that stuff later. Today, a 40 year old man can reasonably expect to have another 30-40 years of life. Or can he? This is the paradox we find ourselves in: statistics tell us we have time yet the reality is that we might not. Therefore, it is important to do something about it immediately.

Do you have your "bucket" list written down? What are all the things that you are looking to do? I understand that statistically you have a lot of time left. However, you might be dead within a year. The point is that we never know.

Tim McGraw wrote a successful song a number of years ago that spoke of living like you were dying. Listening to the lyrics tells me how true it is. We are all dying one day at a time. Everyday we are closer to the end. This thought needs to act as a wakeup call. It is time to stop delaying the future. It might not come.

It is best to plan like you will live forever. At the same time, live like you will die tomorrow. How much differently would you behave if you knew you were going to die within 24 hours? What would your priorities be? I imagine there would be a drastic shift in what you focused upon. Perhaps this is an outlook that you need to adopt.

Begin today by creating your "bucket" list. What do you want to do/accomplish before you die? Do not wait until tomorrow; it might not come.
